"Automated shake flask processing for cellular reagent supply and
bioprocess development"

ambr – improving cell line development for mammalian cells
ambr is a new system designed to mimic mammalian cell culture in bioreactors at microscale (10 – 15mL). It has been optimised to reproduce suspension culture conditions that exist within experimental 5 and 10L bioreactors so that comparable results can be obtained rapidly and at much lower cost. Unlike plate based systems, ambr allows individual control of the environmental conditions as well as feeding and sampling. 24 disposable micro bioreactors can be controlled with an automated workstation to enable a wide range of cell line selection and development experiments to be run. The system can be used to compare multiple clones to select for stability and productivity or multiple replicates of the same clone to compare different feeding strategies and culture conditions on growth and output.

Cellmate - batch production of biologics, process development and research
Sonata, TAP’s latest development is optimised to grow suspension cultures in shake flasks for expansion of mammalian and insect cells. Sonata can be used to automate the manual shake flask processes that are used for cell line development to select cell lines and optimise culture parameters prior to use in bioreactors. The system is capable of fully automating multiple cell line development experiments such as determining growth curves, optimal feeding strategies and stability studies.

Cellmate has been installed in over 80 sites around the world for batch production of biologics (protein therapeutics and vaccines), process development and research. Cellmate allows the same, simple, flask-based (T flasks and roller bottles) manual culture processes to be scaled up from research to production without process change shortening development times, reducing infrastructure requirements and simplifying validation for products that are difficult or impractical to transition in to large scale bioreactor production.

  • Merck chose Cellmate for production of their FDA approved varicella vaccine, Varivax
  • Novartis Animal Health chose Cellmate to automate the production of a range of animal vaccines
  • Baxter Vaccines chose Cellmate for the production of a new generation of cell culture produced influenza vaccine

Cello - high producing clones with optimal growth and expression characteristics
The creation of high producing clones with optimal growth and expression characteristics are rare transfection events and require large-scale experiments to identify them. Cello manages the culturing and logistics of working with 10,000’s of individual clones in parallel, automating the selection process, to ensure that high quality candidates are available for cell line development.

  • AstraZeneca chose Cello to automate their clone selection strategies
